Radiative Trapping and Population Inversions of the SiO Masers,

Abstract

The authors propose a pumping mechanism for the v = 1 masers of SiO. It requires that radiative de-excitation of v = 1 to v = 0 be more rapid than collisional de-excitation, and that the v = 0 to 1 vibrational transitions be optically thick. To demonstrate the proposed pumping mechanism, numerical calculations are presented which attempt to model the SiO sources discovered near stars.
