Report on the Development and Testing of a Gas Generator Operating on Benzene and Nitrous Oxide.
Abstract
The report describes a three phase program to investigate the combustion of benzene and nitrous oxide, the products of such combustion being diluted with gaseous nitrogen. The objective of this process was to provide a soot-free exhaust gas of specified composition and temperature from a combustion system operating at defined mass flow and pressure levels. Phase I included the design and test of a pilot model combustor system operating at 1.0 pounds per second total mass flow and nominal 100 psia combustion chamber pressure. Tests were conducted to investigate various combustor liner configurations, propellant injection systems, ignition, and process flow systems for incorporation into a full scale system. Phase II consisted of the design and fabrication of a full scale combustion system, with remote controls, rated at 10 pps mass flow at 588 psia combustion chamber pressure. Phase III consisted of installation and demonstration testing of the full scale system at the Air Force-Marquardt Jet Laboratory. System calibration tests were conducted plus a series of 34 combustion tests.
