Ethnic-Racial Perceptions and Attitudes by Word and Picture Stimulated Associations,
Abstract
The investigations pursued primarily a methodological objective to test a verbal association based research technique for its potential to assess perceptions and attitudes in the field of interpersonal and race relations. In view of the complex, emotion-laden nature of the subject matter, the use of an indirect, inferential method is highly desirable. The investigations focused on a picture-stimulated association approach, its information value and analytic potential. Student groups (N = 50) of both sexes were used from D.C. Teachers College, University of Maryland, and University of Virginia. These investigations explored the picture-stimulated approach in three separate studies. Study I involved a comparative analysis of associations produced to words and pictures. Study II compared Black and White groups in their reactions to TAT and social interaction pictures. Study III compared Black and White groups in their reactions to film episodes measured by associations elicited to the same stimuli before and after the film presentation.
