Calculation of Thermal Interaction between Arc Column and Electrodes,

Abstract

Two-dimensional nonlinear boundary-value problem on temperature distribution in an arc column with account for the cooling effect of electrodes is stated. A sharp temperature drop near the electrodes is treated as a thermal boundary layer of a column. The accuracy of an approximate boundary condition is discussed. An approximate solution to the problem stated is found by the method of reducing to an ordinary differential equation. Expressions are obtained for distribution of thermal potential and heat flux along the axis. The numerical calculation confirms existence of boundary layers which are most apparent in the curves of fields and potential.
