A Synchronous Generator/Voltage Regulator Simulation for the Digital Computer.

Abstract

The report describes the simulation for a digital computer of a modern 2000 kw synchronous generator system currently used aboard several classes of naval vessels. The report includes a brief discussion of the machine theory which forms the basis for the simulation. The simulation is readily adaptable to other generator systems. The report illustrates an application of the integration subroutine DIFSUB previously developed at NAVSECPHILADIV. This algorithm has been found to permit shorter computing times than the better-known Runge-Kutta or trapazoidal integration schemes when modeling 'stiff' systems (systems whose principal time constants differ by an order of magnitude or more). The simulation has been run on a digital computer and has been found to perform in a manner similar to the real machine.
