Rare Earth Compound Laser.

Abstract

An investigation into the possibility of obtaining laser action in stoichiometric rare earth compounds by low velocity electron beam excitation was conducted. The chemistry, spectroscopy, crystal structure of ultraphosphates are described in detail. Photoluminescent and cathodoluminescent spectra are compared. Absorption and emission spectra are reported and analyzed. Using 5 AD electron guns operated at 3 KV and providing a power flux of 40 watts/sq cm at the sample, the volume excitation rates of rare earth ions are found to be approximately two orders of magnitude below threshold requirements. Suggestions for achieving laser action under modified conditions are formulated.
