Studies of the Army Aviation (V/STOL) Environment. Report No. 3. Worldwide Distributions of Mean Dewpoint: Surface and Lower Atmosphere.

Abstract

Four maps showing the distribution of mean surface dewpoint temperatures for the months of January, April, July, and October, and 96 graphs depicting vertical cross sections of mean dewpoint at elevations below the 500 millibar level of pressure, are presented as a representative sampling of mean dewpoint seasonality as it occurs at and above the surface of the earth. The maps and graphs demonstrate that the distributional characteristics of mean dewpoint are shaped for the most part by air temperature, distance from and degree of exposure to moisture sources, and the depressing effects of elevation. When paired as opposites, the maps and graphs for January and July can be used as a measure for estimating the mean annual range of dewpoint temperature, a particularly advantageous criterion for design engineering purposes.
