Development of a Hybrid Traveling Wave Tube.

Abstract

The 'hybrid' TWT developed on the program combines the best features of both the coupled-cavity circuit and the comb-supported ring-bar circuit. The input section and most of the output section uses the comb-supported ring-bar circuit to provide broad bandwidth without oscillations. At the output end of the output section, a short length of coupled-cavity circuit is added; short enough to be stable at its band edges without the need for oscillation suppression. The coupled-cavity circuit is an order of magnitude less lossy than the comb-supported ring-bar circuit. Its use at the end of the output section, where power levels are highest, prevents efficiency degradation.
