Characterization of R-45M.

Abstract

Methods for determination of molecular weight, equivalent weight and functionality of polymers have been of questionable accuracy. The objectives of this program were to characterize the above properties of six production lot samples of R-45M and to fractionate a sample of R-45M followed by thorough characterization of the fractions. In general, the agreement between GPC and VPO determination of molecular weights was good. Equivalent weight determinations by acetic acid and toluene sulfonyl isocyanate titrations do differ and the true value probably falls between the two determinations. Weight average functionality calculated from the degree of reaction at incipient gelation via the Stockmeyer equation is not precise and requires further work.
