Short Haul Digital VHF Transmission Studies.

Abstract

The report characterizes VHF data channels over path distances of interest to Army tactical communicators. On-the-air tests were conducted over several non line-of-sight paths varying from 6.7 to 14.4 miles (10.8 - 23.2 km) in length. The digital transmission rates were 1.2 and 19.2 kilobits per second (kBPS). During several of the 1.2 kBPS tests, a 11.5 kHz tone was transmitted concurrently. A complete bit-by-bit history of the received digital transmissions was recorded on magnetic tape. The bits in error were determined from a knowledge of the transmitted signal. The report depicts error group distributions and bit error rate variations with path distance. A detailed examination of the variation in bit error rate during two occurrences of signal perturbation is made.
