Foil-Mounted Body Cavitation Characteristics for Hydrofoil Ship.

Abstract

Cavitation inception conditions were determined for a proposed body to be mounted below the foil of the PCH-1 (HIGH POINT) hydrofoil craft. The cavitation characteristics of an 1/8-scale model were determined experimentally and projected to full scale. It is predicted that the full-scale body will cavitate at speeds of 47 knots and above. Several pylon designs were investigated. The best pylon design should cavitate at 36 knots and above when unyawed and unpitched, and at much lower speeds with yaw and pitch displacements.
