Leadership Revisited.

Abstract

This paper, prepared for delivery at the symposium commemorating the 50th anniversary of the inception of the Hawthorne Studies, reviews a variety of approaches to the investigation of leadership in organizations. Concepts of leadership as a general trait and the search for invariant relations between leader behavior and organizational effectiveness are criticized in dealing explicitly with differences in situational requirements for leadership.
