Utilization of Cryogenic Techniques for Storage and Transmission of Electrical Energy,
Abstract
The article notes the need for transmitting large amounts of electric power from the main power sources in Siberia and Kazakhstan to the central part of the country and the limitations of existing superhigh voltage power transmission technology, which make it economically or technically impractical to fill the need by existing technology. Development of superconductivity and its application, by cryogenic techniques, to electric power transmission lines, to transmission of electrical energy trhough superhigh frequency electromagnetic radiation in wave guides and cryogenic energy storage is promising. An illustration and brief discussion of a French cryogenic, zero-resistance storage solenoid are given, and possible use in electricaltraction devices is mentioned.
