Use of 170 in Studying the Properties and Chemistry of Various Oxidizers.

Abstract

Various nitrogen oxides including NO, NO2, N2O3, N2O4 and N2O5 have been investigated by 17O NMR and ESR spectroscopic techniques. The ESR spectra of gaseous NO2 and NO2 were investigated. The isotopic substitution of NO with 14N, 15N, 16O, 17O and 18O resulted in two publications detailing the effect of this isotopic substitution on the ESR or NO. The ESR of NO2 in N2O4 and NO2 in N2O3 both in the liquid state was also observed. 17O NMR characterization of N2O4 and N3O5 was completed. Work was also carried out on the attempted preparation of pernitrates, but time and funds did not permit the complete characterization of these compounds.
