A Small, Rugged 200 Kilobit/Second Laser Communications Systems.

Abstract

The purpose was to produce an advance developmental model of a tactical optical communication set nomenclatured AN/TVC-4 'Small, Rugged, 200-Kilobit/Second Laser Communication System'. The AN/TVC-4 system consists of a pair of terminals that can be operated in a full-duplex mode at any data rate from 240 bits per second (bps) to a maximum of 200 kilobits per second (kbps). The system is required to operate with an error rate of less than 1 bit in 1,000,000 bits 0.000,001 over a 3-km path with a path attenuation of 10 dB per kilometer. In addition to the data mode, the AN/TVC-4 also can function as an analog voice link. The complete transceiver terminal -- which uses a GaAs laser diode source and an avalanche photodetector -- is housed in a rugged 7-in.-wide x 7-in.-high x 7.5-in.-deep package. The r The report describes in detail the system design, component selection and performance analysis of the fabricated AN/TVC-4 system as well as field test results obtained with the equipment.
