Thermodynamic Investigation of Compounds in Rocket Propulsion.

Abstract

The enthalpy of formation of alpha 1 tungsten hexachloride has been determined calorimetrically by combustion of the metal in chlorine under pressure. Differential scanning calorimetry has been used to derive enthalpy changes for the transitions alpha 1 - alpha 2 and alpha 2 - beta in WCl6. Calorimetric measurements have also been made for the determination of the enthalpies of formation of alpha and beta silicon nitrides by combustion in fluorine. It was not possible to progress this work to completion, but a preliminary estimate of the enthalpy of formation of beta-Si3N4 has been made.
