Sepctroscopic Studies of Energy Exchange Processes Occurring in the Upper Atmosphere and Rocket Exhaust Plumes.
Abstract
To obtain improved electromagnetic signal transmission for communication systems, it is necessary to have a detailed understanding of the chemistry and physics of the upper atmosphere and rocket exhaust plumes. Part of this understanding comes from the study of the kinetics of atomic and molecular collisions of excited chemical species. The report summarized the work done on this program whose objective has been to study gas phase kinetics through the use of unique optical spectroscopy techniques developed at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Research has been focused on processes involving electronic and vibrationally excited states. Optical spectroscopy from 100 to 20,000 nm has been used to determine mechanisms and to measure rate constants and cross sections for several low energy collision processes and chemiluminescent reactions involving small molecules.
