Mathematical Models and Electrophysiological Studies of Echolocation.
Abstract
Techniques for using the scanning electron microscope for studying the bat cochlea have been developed and have been especially effective in revealing details of mechanical structure and innervation not previously observable, such as localized stiffening of the basilar membrane and locally specialized innervation. Work on the physiological tuning of the ear and on the bats alteration of output frequency in response to Doppler shifted echoes received in flight has identified previous errors requiring reevaluation of previous hypotheses. As a result of data on hand it is suggested that some bats detect micro-Doppler shifts as amplitude modulation and perhaps use these to identify living prey or prey species.
