X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis of Yttrium-Iron-Gadolinium Solutions Used to Prepare Spray Dried Powders.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop an analytical quality control test method capable of monitoring the yttrium-iron-gadolinium ternary feed stock solutions used to produce phase shifter toroid powders for a planned radar system (SAM-D). An analytical quality control procedure using X-ray secondary emission spectrometry has been developed to monitor iron, yttrium, and gadolinium metal ion ratios in binary and ternary nitric acid feed stock solutions. These feed stock solutions are used to produce spray dried ferrimagnetic powders meeting specifications for ferrite and garnet elements used in microwave components.
