Documentation: An Overview and Design Strategy,

Abstract

The concept of documentation has yet to receive adequate professional attention as evidenced by commonly deficient documentation practices found in many large-scale information collection, processing, and application settings. This paper attempts to 'begin at the beginning,' reconsidering various classes of information, related forms of documentation, and functions performed in a decidedly user-oriented environment. The importance of information dissemination is stressed: not all participants want to know everything all of the time, and some principles of selectivity must be invoked.
