Venereal Diseases in Germany and Austria,

Abstract

The German and Austrian patterns of managing sexually transmitted diseases are quite similar. Diagnosis is largely by smear with methylene blue replacing the Gram strain; cultures are not done routinely as in Britain and the United States. It is of some interest to note that the gonococcal complement fixation test is used quite extensively. Case reporting is haphazard and therefore, statistics are not too reliable. Penicillin is still the choice for the treatment of both gonorrhoea and syphilis. Although much research is clinical a surprising amount of solid investigation is being carried out in Munich regarding dye-coupling errors in fluorescence techniques and the use of an animal model to determine if the primary treatment of gonorrhoea really masks syphilis.
