First Aid for Computer Security, or What to do Until the Experts Arrive,

Abstract

The people in the computer business have created some serious dilemmas for the managers of applications who are concerned about the security of the information that they handle. On the one hand they have created the capabilities of multi-programming, remote access, time-sharing, on-line data bases, and demand processing; on the other they have not come up with reasonable guarantees that unwanted events are not going to happen. The author elaborates at length on the technical and administrative difficulties of providing the desired security, perhaps create a whole new sub-discipline of computer science just to research ADP Security because one must build security from scratch, not patch it in. By examining some real or hypothetical applications in which the privacy aspect of security is the paramount concern, one can hypothesize approaches that can possibly provide interim workable solutions.
