Abstract
The ARPA Network is described as it was in the Summer of 1973. The history of the Network and its projected future development are covered. In addition there is a discussion of the Network's approach to solving many of the problems of large, distributed computer communication networks. The report begins with a description of the communications sub-network and the way in which user computers (Hosts) are interfaced to it. The protocols by which the Hosts communicate with each other and the interlinking of terminals to the network are then discussed. Although it is a distributed network, there are three centres responsible for particular functions: monitoring of the Network's operation; performance measurement and information distribution. These are described. Finally, examples of the uses made of the Network are discussed. These range from the facilities available to users through some examples of remote computation to the influence the Network is having on the organization of computing facilities within a concern.
