COBOL Compiler Validation System (X3.23-1974) ANS COBOL 1974. Segmentation Module Test Specification.

Abstract

The use of COBOL segmentation permits the definition of object time overlay requirements at the source level. This documents in the source program the various types of overlays and eliminates the need and/or requirements to produce Job Control Language to accomplish this function. In this case an object time requirement can be defined, documented and controlled at the source program level. There are three types of segments of code when using COBOL segmentation. They consist of fixed permanent segments, fixed overlayable segments, and independent segments. The size of the object program is determined by summing the size of each fixed permanent segment, and the size of either the largest fixed overlayable segment or the largest independent segment.
