Heuristic Calculations of the Local Energy Release Rate for Semi-Elliptical Surface Cracks.

Abstract

A method of generating the variation of energy release rate along a crack front is discussed. Two examples of possible assumptions and the resulting consequences for crack growth are given. Special attention is given to the surface crack problem, and parameters are included which may be used to match the calculated results with experimental observations. The assumptions are acceptable if the results of the calculations agree with experiment. One of the calculations made using the computed energy release rate is of an estimate of the crack shape corresponding to a constant energy release rate along the crack front. Such an estimate can be used for comparison with experiment, for it is expected that this is the shape assumed by the crack just before rapid failure occurs.
