A Preliminary Study of the Concept of Toughness as Applied to Structures.

Abstract

If the imperfections present in all materials are allowed to grow undetected, a critical size can result which will lead to a catastrophic failure. The analysis of structural toughness can provide a means of determining the amount of damage which a structure may safely sustain. This report investigates progressive damage to a discrete structure. The point of instability and the compliance as a function of the amount of damage are calculated. The limited number of computations does not permit a general definition of structural toughness in terms of the rate of increase of the compilance.
