Off-Axis Resonators.

Abstract

An experimental investigation of a novel unstable resonator configuration is reported. The purpose of the novel configuration is to change the distribution of the uniform-flux area of a standard unstable resonator (an annular beam with a hole in the center) into a configuration such that a maximum amount of the uniform-flux area is contiguous (i.e., provide a much larger region of constant flux). This is accomplished by the present 'off-axis unstable resonator'. The present experimental results indicate no substantial loss of device output power or loss of far-field beam quality by the resonator configuration tested. Additional experimental results are presented indicating the sensitivity of resonator performance due to misalignment of the off-axis resonator.
