Nonhomogeneous Elastic Rod Penetrators

Abstract

The problem of determining the distribution of stress, strain, particle velocity and displacement in long projectiles being impacted is presented. Closed form solutions for these quantities in projectiles with certain types of variable modulus, density and crossectional area are presented. It is concluded that the wave propagation features (including possible failure locations), in inhomogeneous projectiles are somewhat different from those of homogeneous projectiles. Applications to other munitions components such as armor and cartridge cases are presented.
