The New Face of South Asia. The Effect of the Indo-Pakistan War of the Subcontinent.
Abstract
The basic question addressed is what effect did the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 have on the power structure of the South Asian subcontinent, as well as on the interests and influences in the area of the U.S., the U.S.S.R., and the P.R.C. A brief summary of the war was given, along with the positions the superpowers took in the dispute. The post-war situation of the nations involved in the war was discussed, as well as the increase in Soviet influence. The future of the subcontinent was analyzed, taking into consideration possible policies to be pursued. Likely Soviet objectives were also discussed, in order to point to necessary U.S. policy objectives in regard to South Asia.
