Toxic Factors in Burn Injuries: A Discussion Meeting.

Abstract

The paper is an informal account of a multidisciplinary meeting called to discuss the question of toxic factors in burn injury and their possible clinical significance. Emphasis was placed on the Allgower-Schoenenberger 'burn toxin' but other toxic manifestations connected with burn injury and bacterial infection were also considered. The discussion extended to different biologically important proteolipids, to the mechanisms of lipid-protein interactions, and to the relative potencies and modes of action of toxic proteins from various sources. The wide-ranging studies of the burn toxin and its precursor from normal skin, though not yet comprehensive and still open to question on some points and refinement on others, leave little ground for questioning the existence of these two contrasting forms of an apoprotein embedded in lipid.
