Studies of Phlebotomine Sand Flies.

Abstract

Forty five species of phlebotomine sand flies were collected in Colombia in 1973. At least four species are new to science. Several previously unknown females of described males were also encountered. Lutzomyia migonei, an incriminated vector of cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Brazil, was collected for the first time in Columbia. A description of a new man-biting Lutzomyia with a new synonym in the genus is in press. Six subfamilies of Psychodidae were identified. Keys to these, as well as keys to the genera of Phlebotominae which contains the medically important species, are given in the appendices. These are applicable on a world-wide basis. A classification of the large genus Lutzomyia is presented along with preliminary keys to the subgenera and species groups. A preliminary key to the known anthropophilic phlebotomines of the Western Hemisphere is given in Appendix IV.
