Test of a Model of Visual Spatial Discrimination and Its Application to Helicopter Control.

Abstract

This report describes two field studies which tested pilots' abilities to maintain hover control of a helicopter when the visual field was restricted and when referents were specified. Two laboratory studies are also described which tested observer's abilities to detect small displacements in one of a pair of stimulus dots on a CRT display and displacements of 'real-world' visual scenes when only the scene moved or when scene and observer were moved in the pitch dimension. Results of studies are discussed.
