Advanced Digital Processing for Target Classification. Volume II. Study of Acoustic Signatures for Detection of Motorized Activity.

Abstract

This report describes the work performed in the two month period of May 1, 1974 through June 30, 1974, under contract. The task was to investigate the structure of various 'background' noise received at acoustic sensors to determine if algorithms could be developed to distinguish the noise from legitimate target classes, e.g., trucks, APC's, tanks, prop and jet aircraft. The result of this research was the characterization of the various background and target classes based on the structure of their power spectrums. The knowledge of the structures permitted the design of a set of features which should be sufficient to separate non-motorized background from the legitimate target classes.
