The Max-Planck-Gesellschaft and Its Role in German Science,

Abstract

This report concerns the organizational structure of the Max Planck Gesellschaft (MPG) and its role in the determination and implementation of West German scientific policy. After a review of the history of the MPG from 1911 to the present, its democratic organizational form, operating principles, sources of funding, and relationships with the German universities are discussed. The Society attempts to develop new research areas through the provision of optimum research environment for outstanding scientists in its 50 highly diversified, semi-autonomous research interests.
