The Future of the US Military Presence in Korea.

Abstract

The question is whether or not US forces should be maintained in South Korea pending successful conclusion of reunification talks. The historical background leading to today's situation was examined. Information was gathered from recent books and periodicals, and a South Korean career officer was extensively interviewed. The first steps toward unification have been taken, with talks currently underway, but the opponents remain very far apart. There are both political and military requirements for the continued presence of US forces in South Korea.
