Investigation of Advanced Concepts for Explosive Drilling,
Abstract
A program is being conducted for the Army to evaluate some advanced concepts for explosive drilling and determine the feasibility of adapting the process to the task of producing emplacements for atomic demolition munitions (ADM). The approach consists of introducing encapsulated explosive charges into the borehole that explode and fragment the rock at the bottom of the hole into particles that can be removed by any one of several spoils removal methods. Discussions are included of the design, development and testing of the explosive capsules, the means of introducing them into the borehole, and spoils removal techniques. Details of the drilling experiments are provided showing the size and quality of the holes produced and the drilling efficiencies obtained. The problems encountered and the solutions achieved or proposed are discussed. Projections are made concerning the equipment required to produce ADM emplacements under operational conditions.
