Non-Hazardous Primary Lithium-Organic Electrolyte Battery BA-3390( )/U.

Abstract

The subject concerns the development and fabrication of Battery No. BA-5590( )/U in accordance with the performance/safety requirements as defined in the Technical Guidelines for Non-Hazardous Primary Lithium-Organic Electrolyte Batteries dated 29 March 1973. The primary concern has been the fabrication of the subject batteries in conference with these guidelines and most important, the development of effective safety mechanisms to insure non-hazardous operation under all conditions of storage, use and operation. Basic considerations for such safety mechanisms were system reliability, effectiveness, economics and adaptability to eventual automated production. The electrolyte consists of 70% sulfur dioxide by weight. The remaining 30% contains lithium bromide and the organic solvents.
