Fabrication of Aluminum-Graphite Composite.

Abstract

For several years, aluminum-graphite composites have been produced by molten infiltration of continuous tows of graphite fibers. Typically, this composite is in the form of rods or wire approximately 0.050 in. in diameter. Larger size specimens are required in order to evaluate the transverse strength and modulus of the composite. The pressing of larger specimens would also allow one to produce sections of hardware for demonstration and evaluation. For these reasons, a study was made of parameters to fabricate aluminum-graphite composite sheets using rod precursor. The results of this study are described in this report.
