Studies of Bacterial Hybrids between 'Escherichia coli' and 'Salmonella', and Bacteriophage Hybrids between Coliphage and Salmonella Phage.

Abstract

Various hybrid phages between coliphage and Salmonella phage were isolated, using bacterial hybrids between E. coli and Salmonella typhimurium. These hybrid phage species were genetically mapped for homology with their parental phages. Physical maps of the hybrid phage DNA was determined by electron microscopic heteroduplex method with their parental phage DNAs. The role of various parental phage genes of hybrid phages for their replication in E. coli-Salmonella hybrids was carefully analysed. Essential bacterial and viral functions for replication of the hybrid phages in these bacterial hybrids provided important information for the process of viral infection.
