The Preparation and Properties of D2-Meta-Carborane-Siloxane Elastomers.

Abstract

D2-meta-carborane-siloxane elastomers have been reputed to have outstanding thermal properties. The report briefly discusses new approaches to the synthesis of D2-carborane-siloxanes which overcome many of the disadvantages of previous synthetic methods. Thus, linear gum stocks with Tg's of -40 to -25C and molecular weights up to 250,000 have been prepared. Compounded and cured samples exhibit a linear modulus plateau between approximately -20C and >300C, and outstanding maintenance of mechanical properties after heat aging in air at 315C for 300 hours. The property profile and vulcanization chemistry of the D2-carborane-siloxane system suggest utility in high performance sealant, gasket, 0-ring and coating applications.
