The Preparation and Properties of D2-Carborane-Siloxanes.

Abstract

The preparation of linear and amorphous D2-meta-carborane-siloxane polymers having molecular weights up to 250,000 by a new condensation process is described. These unique materials were compounded and vulcanized to give elastomers having outstanding retention of mechanical properties after heat-aging at 300C. An investigation of the effects of structural variations in the gum stock, filler, antioxidant, and peroxide curing agent was carried out. In addition, low temperature properties, flammability, solvent resistance, and adhesive properties (lap-shear strength) were determined. The property profile and vulcanization chemistry of the D2-carborane-siloxane system suggest utility in high performance sealant, gasket, O-ring and coating applications.
