Dual Mode Gun Development (Phase II).

Abstract

The final engineering report covers evaluation of the dual mode performance of a single unifilar helix TWT with two electron guns; a low perveance hollow beam gun for the CW mode and a high perveance solid beam gun for the pulse mode. With the exception of the gun, no other changes to the tube or focusing system were made. Detailed design data for the RF structure was obtained. Characteristics of the electron beams, including beam diameters, scallop amplitudes and, in the case of the hollow beam, the beam thicknesses were experimentally evaluated with applied magnetic field. RF performance in each mode was analyzed in detail. Comparisons were made of gain, efficiency, power output and helix current as a function of frequency.
