Development and Testing of Methods Based on Multivariate Statistics and Signal Processing for Compaction of Large Sets of Scientific Measurement Data.

Abstract

An investigation of data compaction methods based on techniques for multivariate statistics, time series analysis and coding theory is described. The data are multichannel signature-type data collected in the course of large-scale scientific experiments. Several advanced reduction techniques were applied and tested on data consisting of three physical measurement channels plus ephemeris information from the Injun V Satellite. The data occupy 1800 reels of 2400-ft tape, providing considerable motivation to determine suitable compaction methods.
