Investigation of Bit Interleaving Techniques for Use with Viterbi Decoding Over Differentially Coded Satellite Channels,

Abstract

One way to upgrade present differentially encoded phase shift keyed satellite links to provide a data service is to use error correction coding technique such as convolutional coding with Viterbi maximum likelihood decoding. However, some satellite earth station modulation equipments incorporate differential coding which impairs the signal-to-noise performance of Viterbi decoders by up to 2.3 dB. This report investigates one of several solutions to the problem; the use of an appropriate bit interleaver. Computer system simulation and practical measurements on a system model show that if differential coding cannot be removed, 1.0 dB of system gain can be recovered by the application of interleaving.
