Helicopter Lift Margin System.

Abstract

Helicopter power requirements are generally maximum when hovering out of ground effect. Thus, takeoff and landing maneuvers are the most critical, since the power requirements may not be clear to the pilot at the time he must make the corresponding decisions. Power deficiencies at takeoff or landing are very hazardous. To maximize safety of takeoff and landing operations, a system has been devised which presents to the pilot his lift margin, a figure which represents the excess weight which could be accommodated under locally-existing barometric pressure, outside-air-temperature conditions, and engine and rotor system conditions.
