Analysis of Optical Filters for Contrast Enhancement of LED Multi-Mode- Matrix Cockpit Displays.

Abstract

An experimental analysis of a number of optical filters developed for contrast enhancement of LED displays was performed. These filters were designed to allow viewing of the displays in a 10,000 fc environment. A number of contrast formulas are described; using these formulas a contrast of 6:1 at 10, 000 fc ambient light levels is desirable. It is shown that a contrast of 2.5:1 has been achieved at the stated ambient condition using a complex filter consisting of a circular polarizer, bandpass filter and anti-reflective coatings. Suggestions are given for further improving the contrast in order to achieve the desired result.
