Epidemiology and Transmission of Human Filariasis of Inland Korea in the Absence of Known Mosquito Vector.

Abstract

The report presents the results of the last three years of an investigation conducted in the Yongju area of Kyungsangbuk-do. Microfilaria rate among inhabitants were 8.1% from a total of 2,178 person examined by 20 cubic millimeters of night blood. All of the microfilaria (mf) positives were found infected with Brugia malayi, showing typical nocturanl periodicity. Average microfilaria positive rate among villages were 5.0-18.0% with the tendency that the positive rates in villages surrounded by hills were higher than those of the villages located in open areas. Microfilaria positive rates were very low among the younger age groups and gradually increased progressively with the peak, 18.2% in the over 70 age group. The youngest positive was a 5 year old girl. By sex, the increase of microfilaria positive rates in males was higher than in females by progression of age groups.
