A Study of Long-Lived Radiation Processes Associated with Laser Supported Plasmas.

Abstract

An experimental study was made of pulsed laser produced plasmas under various flow conditions. It was hoped that the decay of long lived metastable states could be seen; however, no metastable atoms or molecules were detected. For diatomic gases no molecular species were found, in contrast to results obtained for plasmas produced by continuous wave lasers. Streak and framing photographs were taken and were used to determine plasma structure and absorption wave propagation velocities.
