Can Software Benefit from Hardware Reliability Experience,

Abstract

The question posed in the title is answered with a qualified 'yes'. While software requires a completely different attack on failure mechanisms than is used for hardware, there is considerable commonality in reliability organization and procedures, and some in the systems reliability area. The present lack of a generally accepted metric for software reliability impedes the information transfer from the hardware field. Steps towards a quantitative measure for software reliability are outlined.
