Shear Stabilization of Drift Waves: A New Approach,

Abstract

The problem of shear stabilization of drift waves is studied, introducing a new operator method for the solution of the Vlasov equation which allows a more complete determination of the perturbed distribution and density operators. The resulting equations, even when treated in the second order differential equation approximation, lead to modifications in the presently available stability criteria. These methods may prove useful for the study of various instabilities in fusion related confinement systems with strong density and magnetic field variations.
